Neurosurgery Subinternships

Departmental subinternships allow NYU Grossman School of Medicine students, as well as students from other medical schools, to spend four weeks on the Department of Neurosurgery’s neurosurgical service at NYU Langone’s Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan Campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. These hospitals are all within easy walking distance of each other. Our goal is to help you learn more about neurosurgery, the specifics of our program, and also to assist you on your way towards a career in neurosurgery

Subinternship participants are typically senior medical students who are interested in pursuing a career in neurosurgery and want an in-depth look at how residency works. We understand the importance of letters of recommendation for students applying for neurosurgery residency in the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®). Letters of recommendation are provided by the chair or their designee.

The subinternship is composed of four one-week blocks with rotations through the Kelly service, Ransohoff service, and pediatric neurosurgery at NYU Langone; the services at Bellevue with site director Paul P. Huang, MD; and the Manhattan VA NY Harbor Healthcare System with site director James L. Stone, MD. During this time, students round with the residents, accompany surgeons to the operating room, work up patients for critique by our residents and attending staff, and prepare presentations for various conferences.
