About the Department of Neurosurgery Neurosurgery Events

Neurosurgery Events

NYU Langone’s Department of Neurosurgery holds intra- and interdepartmental teaching conferences throughout the week, with Fridays devoted to conferences from 7:30AM to 3:00PM. Elective surgery is not performed on Fridays. The Friday conferences emphasize resident education with residents presenting clinical problems and taking questions in order to sharpen their decision-making skills. The format is modeled after the oral neurosurgical board examination, helping ensure that our residents are well prepared for the test by the time they finish their training.

Clinical Neuroscience Clinicopathological Case Discussions

These classic clinicopathological conferences are based on one case presentation. Cases selected and presented by members of the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology on an alternating basis. Cases are chosen for their broad educational appeal and may include diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Mature cases with good longitudinal follow-up and multiple therapeutic issues are also included. Neurosurgery, neurology, neuroradiology, and neuropathology residents and faculty members are encouraged to attend.

The conference is structured as follows:

  • patient history and physical details presented by neurosurgery or neurology residents or faculty members; presenter directs the conversation and asks questions
  • discussion by neurology or neurosurgery residents and faculty
  • presentation of imaging by neuroradiology team members
  • group discussion and questions
  • presentation by neuropathology team members
  • presentation of pertinent background material and topic review

The conference timeline is as follows:

  • 20 minutes for the presentation and discussion
  • 10 minutes for radiology and further discussion
  • 30 minutes for pathology presentation, a short talk on the clinical pathological relevance, and final question and answers

Other Departmental Courses and Events

In addition to our weekly conferences, the department provides ongoing medical education for our residents:

  • cadaver dissection
  • surgical case simulation
  • morbidity and mortality conferences
  • other miscellaneous educational events

We also hold a number of departmental events throughout the year.

Monthly Journal Club

Our monthly Neurosurgery Journal Club is an opportunity for residents and faculty to discuss topics and articles of interest. Discussions focus on research, as well as the authoring, review, and publication processes. The conferences are held at Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, and other NYU Langone locations.

Epilepsy Journal Club

At this event, held every Wednesday at 8:00AM, attendees discuss epilepsy-related topics presented by faculty members or hear presentations from invited lecturers. The Epilepsy Journal Club is held in the conference room at NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament

Our department fields a team of players for this yearly tournament, which is usually held in June. The event is sponsored by Columbia University, which helps raise funds for the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation.

Ongoing Events

Other events in our department include the following:

  • graduation ceremony and dinner for outgoing residents (mid-May)
  • visiting professor dinners and lunches (throughout the year)
  • departmental holiday party (late December or early January)
  • other social events as planned by residents and faculty

Patrick J. Kelly Lecture

The Patrick J. Kelly lecture is a lecture series that brings some of the best neurosurgeons from around the world to campus to address our community of residents and faculty. The event was named for Patrick J. Kelly, MD, who served as chair of the Department of Neurosurgery from 1993 to 2008.

The department held its inaugural lecture in 2013, with Fredric Meyer, MD, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic, as its first honorary speaker. The lecture series was made possible in part by the generous contributions of the Abraham J. Gross estate.
