Neurosurgery Medical Student Research Opportunities

Students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine have a strong track record of receiving summer research fellowships to perform basic or clinical research in laboratories at NYU Langone. Students who volunteer in clinical research at NYU Langone’s Department of Neurosurgery are part of our neurosurgery educational program. This program provides research training in the evaluation of patient data and outcomes, using protected health information and de-identified data. Students must have health documentation before conducting research work and have completed any NYU Grossman School of Medicine required training modules.

Basic Research

The Department of Neurosurgery offers basic research opportunities for medical students in the laboratories of Dimitris G. Placantonakis, MD, PhD and Margaret E. Rice, PhD.

Clinical Research

For medical students who are interested in doing clinical research, we offer opportunities to work with our research faculty on a range of clinical research projects in all areas of neurosurgery. Medical students interested in a particular type of research should contact the appropriate faculty member or Douglas Kondziolka, MD, professor of neurosurgery and vice chair of neurosurgery clinical research, at 646-501-2360.

Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship program awards up to 20 fellowships, each in the amount of $2,500, to medical students in the United States or Canada who have completed one or two years of medical school. NYU Grossman School of Medicine students who receive a fellowship spend a summer working in one of NYU Langone’s neurosurgical laboratories and are mentored by a neurosurgical investigator who is a member of the AANS.

Applications for 2021 are available through the NREF and are accepted starting November 1, 2020.
